Where should I ask? It is usually the first thing someone planning a proposal in Portugal wants to know.
So this is my answer. Four of the best places to propose in Portugal, all within an hour of Lisbon, each with the time of day I would choose and the table I would book afterwards. Two palaces in Sintra, two places on the Atlantic.
I have been photographing weddings since 2014 and I am based in Cascais, Portugal. These are places I know well and keep coming back to.
The question takes a minute. The rest of the day is yours, so here are my suggestions for where to celebrate afterwards.
| Place | Where | Time of day | Then |
|---|---|---|---|
| Palácio de Seteais | Sintra | Sunset | Dinner at Marialva, inside the palace |
| Monserrate | Sintra | Morning | Lunch at Lawrence's, Sintra |
| Azenhas do Mar | Sintra coast | Sunset | Dinner at Restaurante Azenhas do Mar |
| Praia do Guincho | Cascais | Sunset | Dinner at Fortaleza do Guincho |
01 / Sintra / Sunset
Palácio de Seteais: a sunset proposal, then dinner at the palace

Palácio de Seteais is an 18th century palace hotel in Sintra, a 30 to 40 minute drive from Lisbon. Its neoclassical arch frames Pena Palace on the hill, and the gardens and viewpoints around it are where I photograph proposals here, in the last light of the day.
It is the most elegant of the four. Quiet lawns, old trees, stone walls covered in ivy. If you picture a proposal in a palace garden, this is it.
Then, dinner
Marialva, Palácio de Seteais
The palace's own restaurant, with refined Portuguese cooking and a terrace over the gardens. You do not even need to get back in the car.
Good to know: the arch and the front lawn are open to everyone, but the inside of the palace is for hotel guests and for people dining there. Booking dinner is what gives you the rest of the evening at Seteais.

02 / Sintra / Morning
Monserrate: a morning proposal, then lunch at Lawrence's

Palácio de Monserrate sits in the Sintra hills, about 40 minutes west of Lisbon, inside a garden planted with species from all over the world. I photograph proposals there in the morning, on the arcaded terrace and along the garden paths.
Then, lunch
Lawrence's Restaurant, Sintra
Inside Lawrence's Hotel, on the road back from Monserrate towards the old town. An elegant dining room with tall windows onto the green hills, and verandas outside. The hotel has been welcoming travellers to Sintra since 1764.
Good to know: lunch is served every day. Book ahead, and tell them it is a celebration.

03 / Sintra coast / Sunset
Azenhas do Mar: a sunset proposal on the cliff, then dinner by the sea

Azenhas do Mar is a white village built on a cliff on the Sintra coast, about 15 minutes from Sintra and 45 minutes from Lisbon. It faces the Atlantic, so the sun goes down over the water, and the viewpoint above the village looks straight down onto the beach and the ocean pool.
White houses, terracotta roofs, the cliff dropping into the sea. It is a very small place, and it feels like it.
The viewpoint is public and well known, so in summer it is rarely empty. That is fine. I know where to stand so the frame belongs to you.
Then, dinner
Restaurante Azenhas do Mar
Right below the village, in a glass dining room over the ocean pool and the beach. Fish and seafood, barnacles that usually come from this stretch of coast, and a bottle of Colares, the local wine from vines grown in the sand.
Good to know: it is open every day. Ask for a table by the glass.
04 / Cascais / Sunset
Praia do Guincho: a sunset proposal on the Atlantic, then dinner at Fortaleza do Guincho

Praia do Guincho is a wild Atlantic beach about 6 km from Cascais, inside the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park and around 40 minutes from Lisbon. It faces west, so the sun sets over the ocean all year round, and the rocks and clifftops around it give you space and a horizon with nothing in the way.
Big sky, big waves, the Sintra hills behind you. For a couple who love the sea, nothing else on this list comes close.
One warning. Guincho is a windsurfing beach for a reason, and it is almost never still. Bring a layer, and leave the elaborate hair for another day.
Then, dinner
Fortaleza do Guincho
A 17th century fort on the rocks at the end of the beach, now a hotel. Its restaurant, led by chef Gil Fernandes, has held a Michelin star since 2001. The ocean is right outside the window.
Good to know: the gastronomic restaurant serves dinner only, Wednesday to Saturday. Choose your proposal day around it.

Choosing
How do I choose the right place to propose?
Choose by the person you are asking. A palace garden or the open Atlantic, a quiet morning or a sunset with dinner after. Seteais and Monserrate suit someone who loves history and green, Azenhas do Mar and Guincho someone who feels at home by the sea.
If wind would spoil it for them, choose a palace. If they would rather be alone than be somewhere grand, tell me, because there are quieter corners I only share with couples I work with.
Once you have chosen, the rest is simple. You and I plan it together, I choose where to stand, and I stay out of sight until the moment happens. Then I photograph a few relaxed portraits of you both while you are still taking it in. You can see how a session works, and what it includes, on my proposal photography page.
You only ask once. Let it feel completely like the two of you.
Questions
Frequently asked questions about where to propose in Portugal
What are the best places to propose near Lisbon?
My four favourites are Palácio de Seteais and Monserrate in Sintra, the cliff village of Azenhas do Mar on the Sintra coast, and Praia do Guincho in Cascais. All four are within an hour of Lisbon, and each has a restaurant nearby where you can celebrate the same day.
Should we book the restaurant before the proposal?
Yes, book it ahead. Fortaleza do Guincho serves dinner only from Wednesday to Saturday, so plan around those days. At Seteais, a dinner booking is also what opens the inside of the palace to you, since only the arch and the front lawn are open to everyone.
Is it better to propose in the morning or at sunset?
It depends on the place. In Sintra I prefer the morning at Monserrate, when the gardens are calm, and the late light at Seteais. On the coast, Azenhas do Mar and Guincho face west, so sunset is the natural choice, and dinner follows on its own.
Can we visit two of these places on the same day?
Yes. Monserrate and Seteais are on the same road in Sintra, a few minutes apart, so a morning at one and an evening at the other works well. Azenhas do Mar and Guincho are both on the coast, a short drive apart through Colares and the Sintra hills.
Do I need a permit to photograph a proposal at these places?
Some places in Sintra charge a fee for professional photography, and a few restrict it. I check each place before your date and tell you exactly what is needed. At Monserrate I buy the tickets in advance, so on the day you simply walk in.
Tell me who you are asking and which of these places feels like them. I will help you plan the rest.
