Proposing at Palácio de Seteais, Sintra

On a Friday evening in September 2026, I photographed a proposal at Palácio de Seteais, the Seteais Palace in Sintra.

The couple were staying at the palace. The question happened at one of the hotel's viewpoints, in the late afternoon. Then we walked through the gardens, under the neoclassical arch, and we stayed there long enough to watch the sun go down.

That is the whole plan, really. And it is why Seteais is one of the places I love most for a proposal in Sintra.

Let me walk you through it: where to stand, when to go, what the light does, how access works, and how I plan a session there so that the only thing you need to think about is the question.

Why propose at palácio de Seteais

Palácio de Seteais sits just outside the historic centre of Sintra, on the road toward Colares, a short walk from Quinta da Regaleira. It was built between 1783 and 1787 for Daniel Gildemeester, the Dutch consul in Lisbon. In 1802 a triumphal arch was added between its two wings to celebrate a royal visit by the Prince Regent John and Princess Carlota Joaquina.

Since 1954 the palace has been a hotel. Today it is Valverde Sintra Palácio de Seteais, a small house of 30 rooms, part of The Leading Hotels of the World.

For a proposal, three things matter more than the history.

It is calm. Sintra is one of the most visited places in Portugal. Seteais is a small hotel with wide gardens, and in the late afternoon it has a quiet you do not easily find a few hundred metres away in the village.

It has two views in one place. Stand under the arch and look one way, and Pena Palace sits on the hill in the distance, framed by the stone. Walk to the end of the garden and look the other way, and the land falls toward the sea.

You can stay the night. When you are a guest, the proposal does not end with a car ride back to Lisbon. It ends with dinner, a bar, a room upstairs. That changes the whole evening.

The best spots for a proposal at Seteais palace

Every couple gets a shortlist from me before the day, with the spot I recommend for the question itself and the ones we use afterwards for portraits. At Seteais these are the places that shape the session.

1. A viewpoint on the palace grounds

This is where the September proposal happened. A viewpoint works well for the question because it gives you a reason to be there. You are two guests stopping to look at the view before dinner. Nothing about it looks planned.

It also gives me what I need: an open space, a background with depth, and a place to be at a discreet distance without being part of the scene.

2. The neoclassical arch

The arch is the image people know from Seteais. It connects the two wings of the palace, and when you stand in it and look through, Pena Palace appears in the distance on the hill.

I like it for portraits after the proposal. It is architecture that frames you without effort, and it gives the photographs a sense of place that nobody needs a caption to understand.

This is where we ended that Friday, watching the sunset.

3. The formal gardens

Behind the palace, the garden is laid out in box hedges, with a walkway running toward a point where you look out over the hedges and down toward the sea.

This is where I let couples walk. No posing, no counting. Just the two of you, a few minutes after the question, with the hedges and the valley behind you. Some of my favourite frames of any session come from this part, when the adrenaline starts to settle and you forget I am there.

The best time to propose at Seteais: sunset

Late afternoon, into sunset. That is what I recommend, and that is what we did in September.

The reason is simple. The light gets softer and warmer, the day visitors thin out, and the evening that follows (dinner, a drink, a walk back to the room) is already waiting for you.

I plan the timing backwards from the sunset. I want the question to happen with enough light left for portraits in the arch and the gardens, so I usually suggest the proposal around an hour to an hour and a half before sunset.

Portugal changes the clocks at the end of March and the end of October, which is why April and November jump.

A note about Sintra weather

Sintra has its own climate. The hills catch the Atlantic air, and fog can sit over the serra while Lisbon, half an hour away, is in full sun. It can also lift in minutes.

Let's be honest: you cannot plan it away. What you can do is keep the evening flexible. I watch the forecast with you in the days before, and I keep a plan for soft light, because fog around the arch and the hedges is a very different photograph, not a worse one.

Staying at the palace: access, and why it helps

The couple I photographed in September were hotel guests, and this is the simplest way to propose at Seteais.

The front lawn and the arch are open to visitors, and you can walk up to the arch and look through it toward Pena. The interior of the palace is for hotel guests and for people dining or having a drink there.

When you are staying at the hotel, everything becomes easier:

You belong there. Walking the gardens at the end of the afternoon is what guests do. It is the perfect cover for a surprise.

The evening is already planned. The palace has its own restaurant, Marialva, and a bar. The hotel also serves afternoon tea and offers picnics in the gardens, if you want to build the day around something other than dinner.

No rush. Nobody is driving back through Sintra's narrow roads after sunset. You stay

How a Seteais proposal works with me

I have been photographing weddings since 2014. Hundreds of weddings, in Portugal, England and the United States, and proposals in Lisbon, Sintra and Cascais. I am based in Cascais, so Seteais is close to home. (If you are staying by the sea, I also wrote about why Cascais is one of the best locations for a surprise proposal.)

Here is what planning looks like.

Before the day

We talk. I want to know how you imagine the moment, and I will help you with the best hour and location in the palace for the proposal you are dreaming about.

On the day

I arrive before you and I stay out of sight. You do not need to look for me. You walk the way we planned, you stop where we planned, and I take care of the rest.

After the question, I give you a moment. Then, once you are ready, we spend time in the arch and the gardens for portraits, into the sunset.

After

You go to dinner. I go home. Your photographs come later, carefully edited, delivered in a private online gallery.

The collections and what each one includes are on my proposal photography page.

Small things that make a difference

Talk to the concierge. If you are a guest, let the hotel know what you are planning. They may be able to help with a table for dinner or something waiting in the room.

Dress for the palace, and for the evening. Sintra is cooler than Lisbon, and it gets cooler fast after sunset. A jacket or a light layer that looks good in photographs is worth it.

If you are looking at more of Sintra

Questions couples ask me about Seteais

Can you propose at Palácio de Seteais without staying at the hotel?

The front lawn and the arch are open to visitors. The interior is for hotel guests and for people dining or having a drink there. Staying at the hotel is the simplest way to have the gardens as part of your evening.

What is the best time for a proposal at Seteais?

Late afternoon, around an hour to an hour and a half before sunset. You get soft light, fewer visitors, and time for portraits in the arch and the gardens as the sun goes down.

Where is Palácio de Seteais?

Just outside the historic centre of Sintra, on the road toward Colares. From Lisbon it is roughly a 30 to 40 minute drive, depending on traffic.

What happens if there is fog?

Sintra fog comes and goes quickly. I follow the forecast with you in the days before and keep a plan for soft light. Fog around the arch and the gardens makes a different photograph, not a worse one.

Will my partner see you before the proposal?

No. I arrive before you, I stay out of sight, and we agree on a simple signal in advance. You do not need to look for me.
