Cascais is one of the best places in Portugal for a surprise proposal because it gives you the Atlantic, the cliffs, the serra and the quiet within twenty minutes of each other, and because its beaches are small enough that you can find one almost to yourselves. It gives you space, which is the one thing a proposal actually needs.

I grew up on this coast. I know which cliff catches the last light in October and which one is full of tour buses at the same hour, which beach empties at seven and which stays busy until dark, and where you can walk for four minutes after she says yes and sit down to dinner with the ocean still in front of you.

That local knowledge is most of what makes a surprise proposal work, and it is the part you cannot get from a map.

What Cascais gives you

Most people arrive with one picture in their head. The sea, or a garden, or somewhere high with a long view. Cascais is the rare place that holds all three within a few minutes of each other.

There is the ocean, first, and it is the open Atlantic here. There are cliffs and open headlands where the coastline turns and there is nothing between you and the horizon. There is the serra behind the town, so within fifteen minutes of the beach you can be at four hundred metres looking down over the whole coast. There are beaches small enough to feel private out of season, with a smell of salt and pine that people tell me they still think about a year later. There are two lighthouses, a harbour full of boats, a park with peacocks in it for the days the wind is impossible, and there are restaurants good enough that the celebration afterwards becomes part of the story rather than an afterthought.

And there is the practical argument, which matters more than it sounds. Cascais is forty minutes from Lisbon by train, the train runs every ten to twenty minutes, and the whole place is walkable once you arrive. A surprise proposal has a lot of moving parts. Cascais removes most of them.

Where to propose in Cascais

Praia do Guincho

Six kilometres from the town, about fifteen minutes by car, and the place I suggest most often to couples who want something wild and also pretty. It is a long open beach inside the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, facing straight into the Atlantic, with the serra rising behind it. The sun sets over the water here all year.

The wind is the trade off. Guincho is a windsurfing beach for a reason, and it is almost never still. That is also why it is almost never crowded, which for a surprise proposal is worth a great deal. Plan hair and clothing for wind rather than fighting it, and it becomes part of the pictures instead of a problem. The dunes at the southern end give you shelter and a place for me to be waiting without being obvious.

Boca do Inferno

The famous one. A collapsed sea cave in the cliffs, twenty minutes' walk from the centre of town along the coast road, free to visit and genuinely dramatic. It is also a very contested spot in Cascais at golden hour.

My honest advice: propose at Boca do Inferno in the morning, when the light comes across the cliffs and the tour groups have not arrived, or pick one of the quieter platforms slightly along the coast from the main viewpoint. If you have your heart set on the evening, we go on a weekday and we go early. In storms the viewpoint sometimes closes, so it always needs a second option.

The serra, for couples who want the mountains

People forget that Cascais has a mountain behind it. Take the road up through Malveira da Serra and within fifteen minutes you are at the Santuário da Peninha, nearly five hundred metres above the sea, looking down over the whole coastline and out to the Atlantic. On a clear day you can see from the bridge in Lisbon to Ericeira.

It is really spectacular but it is the riskiest location on this page. The serra makes its own weather and can be sitting in fog while Cascais is in full sun. I will happily take you there, with a coastal alternative agreed in advance and a decision made on the day.

This is the part couples most often forget, and then they finish the session at half past eight with nowhere to go. Book a table before you fly. Here are some good places I usually suggest to my couples:

Planning the surprise: what to organise before you land

Start early, and tell me more than you think you need to

For spring and autumn dates I ask for one or two months. What I really want from that first conversation is not logistics, it is context: how you met, what your partner loves, what would be perfect for you.

Agree the signal

We choose the exact spot, the exact time and a signal, usually something ordinary, so that I know the question is about to happen and your partner has no reason to look at me. I will already be in position, at a distance, with a long lens. Your only job is to stop thinking about me entirely.

Getting there

The train from Cais do Sodré in Lisbon takes about forty minutes and runs every ten to twenty minutes, all the way along the water. Sit on the left leaving Lisbon. Driving takes about half an hour on the motorway, or an hour along the coast road, which is worth the extra time. Parking in central Cascais in summer is the one genuine difficulty, so if we are meeting in town, come by train.

What a Cascais proposal session actually looks like

You arrive somewhere you have been told is just a walk. I am already there, out of the way, and your partner does not know I exist. You ask. I photograph it from a distance, without a word, and I keep photographing for a minute or two afterwards while nobody is composed and nobody is thinking about the camera. Those are almost always the best frames of the day.

Then I come over, we meet properly, and the rest of the session is a walk. Along the shoreline, up the promenade, into the dunes, wherever we are. By that point you are newly engaged, slightly disbelieving and completely inside the feeling, and the portraits look like it.

Afterwards my team and I prepare a private gallery for you, delivered within just a few days, so you can send it to your families that week.

The best time of year to propose in Cascais

September, if you want my honest answer. The weather is still summer, the crowds thin out once the school holidays end, and the sun sets just before eight, which means you are not sitting down to dinner at ten at night. May and June are close behind. July and August are reliable weather and difficult everywhere else: every beach, every viewpoint, every restaurant is full.

April sounds like it should be perfect and it is genuinely wet here. There is a Portuguese saying about it, em "Abril, Águas mil", and it is accurate. Book April by all means, but book it with a plan B.

And the season nobody suggests: November to February. Cold enough for a coat, empty, and the only time of year when the sun sets over the water from the bay itself. If you want Cascais to yourselves, that is when it is available.

Praia do Guincho for wind, drama and a sunset over open ocean at any time of year. The Santa Marta lighthouse and the cove below it if you want somewhere intimate, accessible and five minutes from dinner. Cabo Raso if you want somewhere almost nobody else uses. The right answer depends on the month, because the bay and the open coast do not get the same sunset.

Two to three months ahead for spring and autumn dates, which are the busiest. For November to February I can often work with much less notice. If your date is close, message me anyway, because it is worth asking.

What time of day should I propose in Cascais?

Be in position between forty five and seventy five minutes before sunset. Between May and August that means going west to Guincho or Cabo Raso for sun over the water. Between November and February the bay itself works and the town is empty. Early morning is the quietest option at Boca do Inferno and Praia da Rainha, where crowds are the real problem.

How does a surprise proposal session actually work?

We plan the location, the time and a signal in advance, by message. On the day I am already in position and out of sight with a long lens before you arrive, so your partner has no idea. I photograph the moment itself from a distance, then introduce myself, and we spend the rest of the session walking and making relaxed portraits.

We agree a second location in advance, always. The coast here changes quickly and the serra can be in fog while the town is in sun. Rain is rare between May and September and real from November to March.
